Blizzard conditions have led Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell to close several major interstates, including the Blue Route and the Schuylkill Expressway.

Worsening travel conditions and low visibility led the governor to call for the closure of I-76, I-476, I-676 and I-176 as of 2 p.m. Wednesday.

“This is a storm that is a very potent combination of elements,” PennDOT spokesman Gene Blaum said.

Blaum said while the interstates will be closed, I-95 and the Pennsylvania Turnpike are still open at this time.

Earlier in the day at 12:30 p.m., Gov. Rendell ordered the closures of Interstate 83 and Interstate 78, and part of Interstate 81 — from the Maryland state line to I-80.

Rendell says blizzard conditions have made the roadways impassable.

PennDOT crew will continue to work on the roadways so they are passable for emergency crews only.

After more than 28 inches fell in Philadelphia over the weekend, the the Eyewitness Weather Team is predicting anywhere from 18 to 24 more inches will blanket the city before the storm moves over.

The surrounding suburbs, as well as interior New Jersey and Delaware, are expected to see between 12 to 18 inches of snow. The Poconos and southern parts of New Jersey can expect between 6 to 12 inches.

This snow storm officially breaks the snowfall record, making 2009-2010 the snowiest season ever.
