GREENLEAF is coming! Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network is bringing to television a new drama series based in a fictional Memphis mega-church, “Calvary Fellowship World Ministries,” headed by “Bishop James Greenleaf,” played by Emmy winning actor Keith David. Other cast members include Lynne Whitfield, Merle Dandridge, Lamman Rucker, Kim Hawthorne, Tye White and, of course, Oprah herself as nightclub-owning Aunt Mavis.
The story starts out with estranged daughter and minister Grace Greenleaf (Merle Dandridge) returning home with her daughter after a 20 year absence on the occasion of her sister’s suspicious death. As she re-enters the sphere of Calvary Fellowship World Ministries, she finds that her parents’ outward displays of piety are concealing numerous sins and evil doings. (of course, it’s a drama!) As you might expect, the tensions beneath the surface begin to emerge at a big family dinner celebrating Grace’s return.
“Greenleaf,” produced by Lionsgate Television for OWN will premiere on OWN Tuesday and Wednesday June 21st and 22nd.
