The Montgomery church where Martin Luther King Jr. served as pastor from 1954 to 1960 and organized the bus boycott is seeking to erect a statue in honor of the civil rights legend.
Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church’s current pastor Cromwell Handy says the church has started a campaign to construct and erect the statue in the courtyard of the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Legacy Center, the Montgomery Advertiser reported.
“Even though it’s a statue, it’s a monument to Montgomery and the foot soldiers of the civil rights movement,” he said.
The Montgomery City Council passed a resolution supporting the effort on Tuesday.
