Most guys aren’t big on talking just for the sake of it, but this advice will encourage him to do exactly that:

  • Watch Your Language – “Questions that start with did, will, or are can result in one-word responses,” says Susan Heitler, Ph.D., author of “The Power of Two.” Instead, make open ended queries that start with what or how.
  • Draw Him Out – “Men sometimes view wrap-up statements, like ‘Well, bosses are like that,’ as conversation-ending cues,” says Ellyn Bader, Ph.D., co-founder of the Couples Institute in Menlo Park, California. Instead, ask specific questions to tease out the details of what happened.
  • Pretend to Read His Mind – Tell him, “When you’re so quiet, I think it’s because you feel…” says Paul Coleman, PsyD, author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Intimacy. “It doesn’t matter what you say; it opens the door for him to disagree.”
