Phillies Land RHP Jhoan Duran in Trade Deadline Deal

The Philadelphia Phillies have made tremendous strides in building a championship roster as the trade deadline ends today (July 31), with their latest pickup of Pitcher Jhoan Duran.
Duran, 27, has played 49 games so far this year, with a 2.01 ERA, 53 strikes and 16 saves.
Duran is known for his fastball, with an average velocity of 100.2 mph, and a curveball he throws in the mid-80s.
The best part about this deal? The Phillies will be able to retain him as an arbitration-eligible player in 2026 and 2027. The dominance and top-of-the-line strikeout and ground ball rates this season, made Duran one of the most desirable relief pitchers on the market.
“This guy’s one of the best closers in baseball,” Phillies manager Rob Thomson said of Duran, “and we’ve turned the bullpen into a really good bullpen as far as I’m concerned.”
David Dombrowski, Phillies’ head of baseball operations, worked diligently to plug the holes in the Phillies’ bullpen, and is confident with the projected return on investment.
“We got a dominant closer for a tough price, two good players, but something that we think [with] where we are makes sense,” Dombrowski said.

Minnesota received catcher Eduardo Tait, listed as a top 100 prospect in the league, as well as rookie pitcher Mick Abel. These two prospects show promise, as they are ranked fourth and fifth, respectively, among the Phillies’ minor league prospects by ESPN.
