Meghan Markle, 37, and Prince Harry, 34, have had a whirlwind of a year and are concluding it with the arrival of a brand new baby.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex just welcomed their first-born son according to a statement on the couple’s official Instagram page.

The news comes after Buckingham Palace confirmed Markle went into labor on Monday.

“The duchess went into labor in the early hours of this morning,” Buckingham Palace said in a statement. Prince Harry was “by her side,” it said, adding “an announcement will be made soon.”

Prince Harry also appeared before cameras on Monday and shared his joy on becoming a new father.

“Excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy, early this morning,” he said. “A very health boy. Mother and baby are doing incredibly well. It’s been the most amazing experience I can ever possibly imagine. How any woman does what they do is beyond comprehension. But we’re both absolutely thrilled.”

Harry thanked everyone for their support and said the couple was still thinking about names. He also shared that a baby reveal will be made in the next two days.

Many speculated that the baby would arrive around the first week of May, as Prince Harry has has dramatically slowed down on his public appearances. Markle went on maternity leave directly after her last public appearance at the Commonwealth Service on March 11. Prince Harry will reportedly take a two-week paternity leave following the baby’s arrival, but may also stay on leave for as long as he feels is necessary.

Prior to the baby’s arrival, both Meghan and Harry kept mum regarding the due date and gender of the baby, though many had their own speculations.

According to NBC News, the new royal baby will be Queen Elizabeth II’s eighth great-grandchild and Prince Charles’ fourth grandchild.

Markle and Harry have vowed to keep many of the details regarding the birth to themselves, opting for a more private celebration instead of the pomp and circumstance surrounding the royal babies before. In April the couple announced they were cancelling the traditional first photo usually taken outside the Lindo Wing at St. Mary’s Hospital, The New York Times reports.

The couple announced their pregnancy in October, just five months after their wedding held at St. George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle.

They continue to break tradition as Markle became one of the first Black women to enter the royal family through marriage. Their wedding tied together Markle’s cultural roots as a descendant of the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
