Hampton University is welcoming a living legend for their 147th Commencement this May. The historically Black university announced that Katherine G. Johnson, the physicist and mathematician who worked for NASA and was an inspiration behind the Oscar nominated “Hidden Figures,” would join them as their commencement speaker this year.
The 98-year-old will who lived in Hampton, Virginia, helped calculate — by hand — the computations that faciliated John Glenn’s orbit around Earth and Alan Shepard’s trip as the first American in space. President Obama awarded her the prestigious Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015.
