On Sunday, February 28th, as the choir sang at  St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church in Dayton, Ohio, the Pastor, Rev. Dr. William Schooler, left the pulpit and headed to his study. He was followed by another man, his brother Daniel. Parishoners heard shots coming from the study and some fled the church. Emergency personnel were called and Dr. Schooler was examined and pronounced dead at the scene.

Dayton police arrived and arrested Daniel Schooler, charging him in his brother’s death. He made his first court appearance on Feb. 29th.

Meanwhile, on the following Sunday, March 6th, members bravely returned to St. Peter’s for their first Sunday services after Dr. Schooler’s death and funeral, held March 3rd; many members citing a need to be together to heal in the aftermath of this tragedy and to remember his legacy. Pastor Nathan Kimbrough, Dr. Schooler’s nephew, led the services, saying  “It was all about being one. Being together. Loving. Do not forget the legacy of Doctor Schooler.” This was truly Christian courage and love in action. We add our prayers for healing and forgiveness for the family of Dr. Schooler and his brother and the members of St. Peter’s Missionary Baptist Church.

A motive has not been announced, but his brother has pleaded not guilty to a charge of murder.
