Philly-Adrienne

We are proud to announce the winner of Philadelphia’s Hometown Champion Adrienne Simpson!

In March of 2013, when Philadelphia magazine ran their racially charged story, “Being White in Philly,” Adrienne Simpson (the magazine’s lone fulltime black employee) wrote a rebuttal op-ed in the Philadelphia Inquirer. She took her employer to task eloquently, knowingly risking her job and reputation. Her words echoed as she received mention and accolades from CNN, city and government officials, and bloggers and journalists from as far away as Australia. Adrienne is my Hometown Champion because she spoke up when most people would have remained silent. She publicly opposed her employer for the benefit of Philadelphia and all its inhabitants.
