Madea takes a vacation. No, that’s not the name of Tyler Perry’s next stage play. It is, in fact, the truth. Constantly touring, producing and starring in movies, and handling the day-to-day duties of being a movie mogul, have taken a toll on the Christian entertainer. So Perry says he’s hanging up his dress and wig for a much-needed break.
“As much as I love to be out on stage and doing a live Madea show, the time has come again for me to take a long break from the stage,” he told his supporters via a letter posted on his website.
Though Perry will cease appearing in any live stage productions after the last leg of his “Madea Gets a Job” tour ends in November, the actor has plenty things left to occupy his time. His new film, Alex Cross, in which he plays the lead character based on the worldwide best-selling novels by James Patterson, hits theaters October 19.
According to Perry, this is not the first time the bodacious grandma with the larger than life persona had to take a vacation. “I don’t know if you remember this or not, but around 2005 I took off from touring my Madea plays for about 5 years,” he writes. “During that time, I was working mostly on movies and TV shows.”
Though Mr. Perry does not specify how long his break will last, he is encouraging his supporters to check out one of his final performances before Madea takes a vacation. “If you have never seen me live, you have never seen me at all,” says Perry, who promises the show will have audiences “rocking and rolling and laughing and crying and singing.”
