For the first time singer/actress Jennifer Hudson discusses what she’s rarely talked about in the media, how she handled the loss of her mother, brother and nephew in a tragic triple homicide in 2008. Hudson also reveals one of the things that saved her during that time. Hudson says she could have been present at her family’s Chicago home when the murders took place, except for the fact that she was asked to fly out to see her fiancee, reality TV alum David Otunga.

“That’s one of the things that saved me,” she told Ebony. “I flew out to see him, that’s why I’m still here.”

Hudson also sets the record straight about her weight loss, saying that she never confirmed that she’s a size zero. (“View” co-host Joy Behar actually made the comment.)  The star, who is still set to marry Otunga, confirms that she’s in a good place these days, due to her family and her faith.

The December/January issue of Ebony is on newsstands and available as an iPad app now.
