After more than three decades of chart-topping hits and iconic music videos, Mariah Carey finally received her first MTV Video Music Award on Sunday — and it was one of the show’s highest honors.

Ariana Grande presented Carey with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, MTV’s lifetime achievement recognition, greeting her with air kisses before handing over the trophy.

“Thank you, MTV, for giving me the Vanguard Award. I can’t believe I’m getting my first VMA tonight,” Carey said during her acceptance speech. “I just have one question. What in the Sam Hill were you waiting for?”

It’s a fair question. Since her debut single “Vision of Love” hit No. 1 in 1990, Carey has earned 18 more Billboard Hot 100 chart-toppers — the most of any solo artist in history.

Before accepting the award, Carey performed a medley of some of her biggest hits, including “Dreamlover,” “Heartbreaker,” “Obsessed,” “Like That,” and “We Belong Together.” Dressed in a sparkling gold sequined bodysuit and boots, and backed by a troupe of mostly male dancers, she delivered a set that reminded the audience why she’s considered one of music’s ultimate divas.

“Being here brings back amazing memories,” Carey said, recalling the 1998 VMAs when she and Whitney Houston opened the show with a playful faux rivalry. “It was a moment,” she added with a laugh.

Reflecting on her career, Carey noted, “After all this time, I’ve learned that music evolves, videos evolve, but the fun — that is eternal.”

Fans won’t have to wait long for more music from the superstar. Carey’s 16th studio album, Here for It All, is scheduled for release on Sept. 26.
