Each year to celebrate Black History Month the Association for the Study of African American Life and History (ASALH) chooses a theme as a point of reflection and research during the 28-day observation.

With Black History Month upon us, there may be no better time to reflect on the timeless and seemingly endless contributions that Black people have bestowed upon these United States.

Black History Month started in 1926 as Negro History Week, established by a historian named Carter G. Woodson.

The legendary writer was born on Feb. 1, a date that would through no coincidence go on to mark the start of Black History Month.
