When you’re a black person, and white nationalists ask you to speak for them, your life is probably on the wrong track.

So when Republican lawmakers asked Candace Owens to be a witness at a Congressional hearing on white nationalism, somebody shoulda ran and got her mama. Somebody shoulda reached out to her pastor. Somebody shoulda texted her brother and said, Yo, come get your peeps.

But nobody did that, so Candace Owens, a black woman, went to speak on behalf of those whose main job is hating black folk. In that moment, I really needed somebody to throw on some Public Enemy and tell her to fight the power. But when that didn’t happen, Congressman Ted Lieu stepped up and did the next best thing. He played one of Owens’ most bizzare speeches so she could hear it for herself.

“Whenever we say ‘nationalism,’” Owens said on the tape, “the first thing people think about, at least in America, is Hitler. You know, he was a national socialist, but if Hitler had just wanted to make Germany great and have things run well, OK, fine.”
