President Donald Trump’s senior national security officials had a clear and consistent message on Thursday about their work to combat Russian election meddling: We’re on it.

“The president has specifically directed us to make the matter of the election meddling and securing our election process a top priority, and we have done that and are doing that and will continue to do so,” Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats told reporters at the White House.

The gathering of top law enforcement and intelligence officials came less than 100 days before the midterms and amid increasing reports that Russia is continuing to meddle in the elections and U.S. politics more broadly through cyberattacks and social media disinformation campaigns.

The president himself continues to offer conflicting views about whether Moscow is still meddling in the U.S., and on Wednesday he urged Attorney General Jeff Sessions to end special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
