A 13-year-old boy is dead after police in Columbus, Ohio, fatally shot him when he reportedly pulled a BB gun from his waistband.
Tyre King was among a group of people wanted for questioning in an alleged armed robbery. When officers arrived on the scene, they approached three people who matched the suspects’ description. According to a police statement obtained by NBC News, when authorities approached the men, they ran way.
“Officers followed the males to the alley … and attempted to take them into custody when one suspect pulled a gun from his waistband,” police revealed. “One officer shot and struck the suspect multiple times.”
The police department tweeted this photo of the BB gun, which resembles the weapons officers carry, according to Columbus Police Chief Kim Jacobs:
The tragic incident comes just two years after the death of Tamir Rice — a 12-year-old gunned down by a Cleveland police officer while brandishing a toy gun.
The officer who shot King, Bryan Mason, was previously involved in the killing of an armed man back in 2012. His department determined he acted within policy. For this case, Mason has been given paid administrative leave for the week along with “mandated psychological support counseling,” according to the Columbus police.
It has not been determined if police were wearing body cameras.
