DENISE “VANITY” MATTHEWS PASSES AWAY AT AGE 57
Known by many as “Vanity,” from her pop music persona, Denise Katrina Matthews passed away Monday at a hospital in Fremont, California.
After a career in entertainment as a model, singer and actress, known as a protégé of pop star Prince, she gave her life to the Lord, eventually becoming an evangelist. She led her own congregation, Pure Heart Ministries in Fremont. As a Christian, she distanced herself from her former career, saying she had been miserable throughout it.
Healed from addiction, she wrote a book, “Blame It On Vanity,” about her experiences in the entertainment industry and her health problems.
A former drug abuser, Denise was known to have suffered from several serious health issues, including kidney disease. She had set up a GoFundMe page to get financial help for treating her sclerosing encapsulating peritonitis, which causes a blockage and inflammation of the small intestines. In an interview in Rolling Stone magazine, she said “I don’t listen to my old music of Vanity’s unless I have to hear it playing in a mall or something place like that,” she said. “I sing to Jesus for Jesus now. This gives me pure joy … worship! I apologize profusely to those I have offended deeply a million times over.”
Denise Katrina “Vanity” Matthews, dead at 57.
