JAMES CLEVELAND-ELEV8

Today in honor of Black History Month, we celebrate Rev. Dr. James Cleveland.

The Reverend Dr. James L. Cleveland was born December 5, 1931, in Chicago and was regarded by many as the greatest gospel singers that ever lived. He was a singer, arranger, composer and, most significantly, the driving force behind the creation of the modern gospel sound, bringing the stylistic daring of hard gospel and jazz and pop music influences to arrangements for mass choirs. He is known as the King of Gospel music.

James Cleveland went on to win 4 Grammys for Best Soul Gospel Performance. James Cleveland passed away on February 9, 1991.
