Chavis Carter of Jonesboro, Arkansas died of a gunshot wound to the head Saturday after being handcuffed and thrown in the back of a police car. According to police. Carter committed killed himself in the back of the squad car while police searched his vehicle. They had already searched Carter’s person and found no weapon. Officials said Carter was riding in the passenger seat of a pickup truck that was pulled over by police around 10pm.

Police found marijuana plastic baggies and after running his information, the officers discovered Carter had a warrant out in the state of Mississippi. Here is where the story gets tricky.

Police say while Carter was in the back of the police car he pulled a gun from his already searched body and while hands handcuffed behind his back shoots himself in the head. Officers claimed they missed the gun during their two searches of Carter.

Carter’s mother is outraged and believes foul play was involved.

“I think they killed him, my son wasn’t suicidal,” she told WREG. She says her son was left-handed, but was shot in the right temple, and had previously placed a phone call to his girlfriend to tell her that he would be calling her from jail. “I mean, I just want to know what really happened,”she said.
