CeCe Winans met Whitney Houston in the mid-eighties at the NAACP Image awards where they began a lifelong friendship.  CeCe tells Detroit News that on February 6th Whitney called her to thank her for the new Bible she had sent her. That was their last conversation.

Winans told the Detroit News: “I called to check on her, saying, ‘Hey sis, how you doing,’ and she said she was great,” Winans says. “She told me about ‘Sparkle,’ and thanked me for the new Bible I had just sent her, because the other one she had was worn out. I said, ‘Are you doing what it says or is it just worn out, which is it?’ And she would laugh. She thanked me, and I told her I was praying for her and told her to take care of herself, and unfortunately that was my last conversation with her.”

When news hit that Houston was found lifeless, partially submerged in a bathtub, in her room at the Beverly Hilton last Saturday and was pronounced dead at 3:55 p.m.—just 5 days after their last conversation—Winans was crushed. “She knew she could always call me whenever the time and I would come,” Winans told the Detroit News. “I just feel bad I wasn’t there for her this time.”
