Autism-Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a range of complex neurodevelopment disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior.

Autism

*affects 1 in 88 children and 1 in 54 boys

*fastest growing developmental disability in the United States

*receives less than 5% research funding

*affects boys more than girls

*no cure

* usually diagnosed at age 3

*typically a life-long condition

Symptoms

*social (prefers to play alone, makes limited or no eye contact, failure to respond to their name, shows no affection) Trey made no eye contact/nor responded to his name until the age of 6, it was at that time he called me Mom for the first time)

*communication (non-verbal or speak delay) Trey did not talk until the age of 6.

*repetitive behaviors-(hand flapping, rocking, jumping, arranging/rearranging objects, repeating sounds or words) Trey has done all of this.

Treatment

*early Intervention Services (this is so important)

*a lot of love and patience

*therapy (both child and parent)

*continued screening and medical attention (in some cases medicine)

*a structured life (daily routines)

*an awesome Special Education School and program (even if you have to move to find one, do it)

What has and continues to help me the parent of a child with autism:

*acceptance (don’t blame yourself, there’s no time for that you have work to do for your child) and celebration (it could be worse)

*prayer, patience and a sense of humor

* develop the skill of http://www.google.com (research and become and advocate and educator for your child, you can’t help with something you don’t know)

*develop memories

*DO NOT compare your child to any other child with autism or without it.

(always remember there are “normal” children in worse conditions than your diagnosed autistic child)

*get your child in involved in activities (see what makes them happy, it’s not about you, if they dislike sports, try music, etc., etc.)

*network with other autism families, join as many autism foundations as you can, they have all the resources.

*as a parent continue to enjoy your life also

* tell your doctors and support organizations your needs. I have received free resources in the thousands over the years for Trey; you can’t receive what you don’t ask for.

*teach your child at home along with getting them educated at school, they lose information faster than they retain it, every minute they should be learning or recapping something they have already learned.
