“I need to say this because every time the issue of speed cameras comes up, someone says to me, ‘This is about a revenue grab. This is about money. This is about dollars.’ My response is that this is about safety,”.
“According to research by Penn, speed cameras have saved one life per month on Roosevelt Blvd,” said Parker
Philadelphia Parking Authority executive director Rich Lazer was able to back the Mayor’s sentiments, saying the cameras have been proven to be effective at reducing speeds.
“This program does work,” Lazer said. “We go out, we tour the corridor, we look at the data.” He said the cameras will be installed where their evaluation has determined is the most dangerous parts of the roadway.
According to sources, since installing speed cameras on Roosevelt Boulevard, speeding violations are down 95%. Fatal and serious injury crashes are down 21%, and crashes involving pedestrians are down 50%.
“We’re going to have 30 cameras on Route 611 at 15 different locations. So that process is moving now. The permitting process is starting and we’ll have them hopefully up and running in March,” Lazer said.
How much are speeding camera fines?
Once new cameras are installed, there is a two-month period where the PPA will give warnings before issuing tickets.
After the grace period, tickets will begin at $100 for going 11 to 19 miles over the speed limit exceeding to $125 for going 20 to 29 miles over the speed limit. Ultimately a $150 fine will be assessed for going 30-plus miles over the speed limit.
