On a recent appearance on Sirius XM’s “The Howard Stern Show” to promote his new show “The BeBe Experience,” which airs on the same on the satellite radio station, BeBe Winans made a revealing statement. During their conversation, Winans stated: “I’m not religious at all, but I believe in God and I have a relationship [with Him].”

As one of the most prominent and recognizable artists in contemporary Gospel, and as a member of one of Gospel’s most prominent families, is this statement by Winans about not being religious shocking? Is there an expectation for all Gospel artists to be religious, or can non-religious Gospel singers have the same amount of credibility as those who are deeply religious?
