The Gallery at Market East has long been a hangout for city teens, and for years the mall neighborhood has been viewed as Center City’s most unwelcoming commercial strip.

When about 150 teens spilled out of the Gallery on Tuesday, rampaging through the nearby Macy’s, knocking down pedestrians, and generally terrorizing Center City at rush hour, more than just a few department-store displays might have been damaged.

The teens may have marred the city’s reputation, and further tarnished an area already considered a dead zone in the midst of Philadelphia’s biggest tourist draws.
