UPPER DARBY, Pa. – February 28, 2010 (WPVI) — Upper Darby police are searching for the person who stole money from the church collection at a morning worship service.

At around 9:30 a.m. Sunday, a young parishioner, just finishing the morning collection during Mass, walked to the rectory, when a masked man approached.

“He told him to give him the money and keep on walking. The young man gave him the money. The bad guy took off with the bag,” Upper Darby police superintendent Michael Chitwood said.

Superintendant Chitwood says the suspect ran down Mason Street where he ditched his mask and sunglasses inside a trashcan along the trolley line.

“The sad thing is here you are going to church on Sunday, house of worship, house of God and you got this thug, I call him parasite for, lack of a better word, robbing during the course of the mass,” Chitwood said.

Police are only releasing a vague description of the suspect. He’s described as a white male in his 20’s, 5’6″, wearing a gray sweatshirt and white sneakers.

Investigators have several witnesses and believe they’ll catch the crook.

“Apparently he was sitting in the church and several of witnesses say that he looked very, very suspicious. He was shakey. He was fidgety, he was up, he was down. Right after the gospel, allegedly, he then went to the bathroo, and that’s probably where he laid in wait,” Chitwood said.

Parishioners were notified about the robbery so they can cancel their checks.
