As we continue to honor and celebrate Black History Month, lets get into this Patti LaBelle’s special with NPR Music’s Tiny Desk series!
The first song in Patti LaBelle’s Tiny Desk (home) concert sets the presedence for her 15-minute set of just absolutely beautiful music! Ms. Patti leads with “Something Special (Is Gonna Happen Tonight)” from her 1986 album Winner In You is a highlight from one of many chapters in her fabulous career.
All taking place at her home, the entire thirteen member band fits all on the screen as they provide us with delicate acoustics, fierce background vocals, gentle piano and horns to recreate some of the best classical moments from the Godmother of Soul.
LaBelle serenades us with “Love, Need and Want You”, in the the same vibrancy as the 1983 original, with a wink to another hit, “Dilemma,” by Nelly, who sampled it 19 years later. The elite songstress continue with “If Only You Knew.” She closes with the anthem “Lady Marmalade,” which was also revived in the early 2000s by Christina Aguilera, Mya, Pink and Lil’ Kim.
Sixty years and counting, the legendary soul singer from Philadelphia continues to sing in such a powerful, pure and elegant grace. Ms. Patti LaBelle, STILL takes our breath away with her dynamite voice!
