Philadelphia Police have arrested a suspect who led officers on a pursuit on the Schuylkill Expressway in a stolen medical transport van Wednesday morning.

Chopper 3 HD was over the westbound lanes of the Schuylkill Expressway as police chased a transport van reported stolen from a dialysis center at Broad and Champlost at about 8:30 a.m.

“I went inside, dropped off a patient; came back outside and the truck was gone,” said ambulance driver Sam Riddell.

The ambulance crew quickly called 911. Police say a Lo-Jack tracking device helped them catch up with the stolen vehicle on the Schuylkill Expressway.

The suspect drove through two spike strips before coming to a stop in the left hand lanes. With guns drawn, police were able to take the suspect into custody without incident.

Initial reports say the suspect has a history of mental illness. The incident remains under investigation.
