PennDOT is bringing out the big truck to help clear potentially massive snow drifts as blizzard conditions are expected in the Philadelphia region Wednesday.

Spokesman Gene Blaum said the truck, which resembles a monster snow blower, was brought in from Erie, Pa. to handle snow drifts of up to 15 feet.

“If an expressway or main highway for some reason today gets a snow drift come in and block it, we’re going to have this piece of machinery to open up the highway,” Blaum said.

Heavy snow and strong winds are expected throughout the day Wednesday, causing potentially hazardous conditions on area roadways. If you are on the road during a white-out situation, PennDOT said drivers should try to get off the road safely and come to a complete stop.

Currently, PennDOT said 2,200 plows are operational and will be patrolling major roadways. Secondary roads are a lower priority during severe weather, meaning they may have deeper accumulations of snow and ice.
