MOUNT LAUREL, N.J. (AP) ―Even before the first snowflakes fell on the state Tuesday night, much of normal life was canceled for Wednesday.

Gov. Chris Christie and state police Superintendent Rick Fuentes authorized the closure of all state offices. Schools and colleges said they’d be closed for the day. Local governments began pleading with drivers to stay off the streets while plows went to work.

NJ Transit said it would cross-honor tickets on buses and trains beginning at 5 a.m. Wednesday and would keep train station waiting rooms and buildings open for extra hours through Monday

Schools were announcing Wednesday closings, and even deliberations in a federal corruption trial in Newark were scratched for that day.

Wet snow began falling over the southern portion of the state at around 7:30 p.m. Forecasters expected that the midweek storm would break the winter snowfall records in the southern part of the state.

The National Weather Service said that by the time the snow stops falling late Wednesday, most parts of New Jersey would have about a foot of fresh snow.
