Black Music Month - Fred Hammond

Source: CS / CS

June is Black Music Month, a celebration of African-American musicians, creators, innovators and influencers. For 2018, the Urban One family is highlighting 25 of the most influential musicians of all-time that have contributed to black spaces far and wide, ranging from inspirational, to hip-hop and R&B.

Artist: Fred Hammond

Genre: Gospel

Quick Highlights: Grammy Award Winner, multi-time Dove Award Winner, multi-time Stellar Award winner

A four-decade career in gospel normally means one has not only shifted the genre but also added even more to its vast tapestry. For Fred Hammond, moving from being a bass player for the legendary Winans into a solo star and a member of Commissioned has not only helped him establish his own foothold in gospel, but prove his place in music as a whole.

A multi-time Dove, Stellar and Grammy Award winner, Hammond is credited with bridging the gap between contemporary and traditional gospel, having multiple albums reach the top of the Billboard charts and the ability to reach out and perform with secular artists such as Sean “Diddy” Combs and Snoop Dogg.

Gospel artists normally have their home within one section of fans, those that strictly listen to gospel and nothing else. Hammond’s crossover appeal not only endears him to those that would listen to him on Sundays but every day of the week to carry the faith on.
