As an Eagles fan, has reality set in yet that we are really Super Bowl champions?! It still seams like a distant dream, but it’s a reality, and the journey for a repeat championship kicks off this Friday with the start of the NFL Draft. The Eagles will be selecting last in the first round, but with all the celebrations of the Super Bowl and success of the 76ers, this NFL Draft feels diffrent then any other year.
Another thing a Philadelphia football team has never experienced was the traditional visit to the White House after winning the NFL championship. Traditionally, the teams go down and meet with the President, take a team photo in the front yard, etc.
Well this isn’t your “traditional” President in the White House right now, and has cause players to question/refuse to attend the long established visit.
Brandon Graham is the latest player to open up about this. While on a local Philly sports station, Brandon Graham made it very clear with what side of the decision he sits on:
“Right now I haven’t talked to anybody, but as of right now I won’t be there,” Graham said. “I’m going to be, you know, just here enjoying and waiting on the ring ceremony. I can’t wait to look at the rings. Once we figure everything out, they’ll see what they’re going to do.
“I’m going to relax and enjoy this ring ceremony, whenever that is. That’s what I’m more focused on right now.”
Chris Long and LeGarrette Bount did not go last year after they won the championship with the New England Patriots.
Long explained his decision not to go to the White House last season, which has a lot to do with Trump.
“My son grows up, and I believe the legacy of our president is going to be what it is,” Long said. “I don’t want him to say, ‘Hey dad, why’d you go (to the White House) when you knew the right thing was to not go?’”
Former wide receiver Torrey Smith reciprocated Long’s thoughts during Super Bowl week:
“We read the news just like everyone else,” Smith said during Super Bowl week. “You see Donald Trump tweet something … We have those conversations in the locker room, just like everyone else does in the workplace. We’re very informed about what goes on, and we’re trying to continue to educate ourselves. It’s pretty special to have a group like that of folks that aren’t just socially conscious, but folks who genuinely care about people and care about learning more.
“I’m not saying we’re right about everything, but we’re willing to figure out what is right. We’re willing to work with people to find the best way to move forward, because there are problems and we’re not shy about speaking up about them.”
The Eagles White House visit has not been finalized, but discussions for a visit have been planned.
