The ideal of Martin Luther King Jr. Day was advocated by labor unions and King’s widow, Coretta. She fought and petitioned against Congress for many years, and finally in 1980, she presented a second petition containing 6 million signatures of support. The House passed the bill with a vote of 338 to 90 to recognize the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

On Monday, January 15, 2018, the leadership of Stronger Partners, Stronger Schools will embark on a beautification painting project designed to replace the current colors in the sitorium and gymnasia that will be replaced with the royal colors of blue and gold, which are Roosevelt school colors.
 
During the Martin L.  King Day of Service Stronger Partners, Stronger Schools have a unique opportunity to unite volunteer services and issue a call to action to do what we can, as Americans, do best – lend a hand, help our neighbors – and build better communities and schools.

JANUARY 14-16, 2017

The  Eastern State Penitentiary  will  host Martin Luther King Jr. Day with special readings of King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” three times a day on Saturday, Sunday and Monday at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.

An informal Q & A session moderated by a civil rights scholar will follow each reading, and on Monday, January 16, children ages 7-12 can create artwork in response to the letter. The events are free and open to the public.

The Woodmere Art Museum will host its annual MLK Day of Service event. It’s free and open to the public. Visitors will have the opportunity to view the several art exhibits along with special performances and speeches honoring Dr. King.

January 15, 2018

Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Holmesburg will host a service event on MLK Day to support the homeless in the Philadelphia area. The event will start at 9:00am with a continental breakfast followed by a panel discussion called ‘’Homelessness “Who Is My Neighbor?” If you are not able to make the event you can stop by and drop off canned goods and toiletries.

Join The Philadelphia Orchestra  on January 15, 2018 at Girard College for a tribute concert for Martin Luther King Jr.  The concert is free and tickets will be available starting January 9th at 12:00pm. Doors open at 1:00pm and the concert start at 1:30pm.

The National Museum of American Jewish History will honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. with a day filled with family-friendly performances and arts and crafts activities, spotlight talks about social justice, and more. Program starts at 10:00 am and ends at 5:00 pm.

Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day – Northeast Philly

Join the Delaware River City Corporation to celebrate Martin Luther King Jr. Day with a service project in Pennypack on the Delaware Park. This park is well-loved by the community and we want to keep it that way! Service work may include cleaning trash from the natural areas and shoreline, moving fallen timber, cutting brush and shoveling and raking a nature trail.

All ages and skill levels are welcome, there is something for everyone to help with! Tell your family, friends and neighbors to join from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm for a day of service and fun!

Every year, the City of Philadelphia hosts the largest Martin Luther King Jr. Day event in the nation – Be a part of the action and join Fox Net Impact from 8:15 am to 2:00 pm at Frankford High School  to volunteer with City Year Philadelphia to create a more colorful, inspiring & harmonious space for students through painted murals and small building projects.

MLK Day Of Service – Let’s Make A Difference

 

Voorhess Township Center will host a day of service to support hospitalized children.Volunteers will spend the day making care packages for teens who have cancer. All care packages will be shipped out to hospitalized teens around the world.

MLK Day Event & Volunteer Project

Afro Philly will start their MLK Day of service at 10:00am with classic clips that will display Martin Luther King Jr. speeches and a discussion about the disconnect for justice by the black community. Followed by the presentations volunteers will team up to pass flyers out to help bring resources for health and economic development in the black community.
