The ideal of Martin Luther King Jr. Day was advocated by labor unions and King’s widow, Coretta. She fought and petitioned against Congress for many years, and finally in 1980, she presented a second petition containing 6 million signatures of support. The House passed the bill with a vote of 338 to 90 to recognize the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
