Philly.com- Gov. Wolf accepted the resignation of the chairman of the state Board of Education on Thursday after the Inquirer and Daily News reported that a number of women said he had pursued sexual relationships with them when they were teenagers and he was years their senior. Chairman Larry Wittig joined the board in 2001.

“The alleged behavior that has come to light is reprehensible,” J.J. Abbott, Wolf’s spokesman, said in a statement. “The administration is in the process of identifying potential replacements for Mr. Wittig’s seat on the state board and will be designating a new chair in the very near future.”

On Thursday, Wittig was removed from the president’s leadership council at his alma mater,  Drexel University. Officials at Philadelphia University-Thomas Jefferson University requested his resignation from their board of trustees, on which he has served since 2005.

Wittig, 68, told the Lehighton Times News that he had had sex with one of the women, but denied it had been “an ongoing relationship,” as she contends.

CNN- The US Senate approved a short-term spending measure Thursday night to keep the government open through January 19, avoiding a government shutdown ahead of a Friday deadline.

Along with funding the government for nearly a month, the bill extends funding for the Children’s Health Insurance Program through March and includes a three-week extension of a government surveillance program.

The House approved the measure earlier Thursday by 231-188.

Immediately after the vote, the House also passed an $81 billion disaster aid bill in the wake of this year’s devastating hurricanes and wildfires. The bill includes additional money for hurricane recovery in Texas, Florida, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands, along with fires that affected California. It passed the House 251-169, but it’s not expected to be taken up in the Senate until after the new year.

CNN Money- John Schnatter, who founded the Papa John’s pizza chain in the 1980s, is leaving the chief executive seat.

He’ll stay on with the company as its chairman, the company said Thursday in a press release. Replacing him is Steve Ritchie, the current chief operating officer. The change will take effect on January 1, the company said. There was no reason given for the change in leadership.

The shakeup comes after a string of public relations debacles and slumping sales.

Papa John’s is a major NFL sponsor, and Schnatter wasn’t shy about sharing his thoughts about players who took a knee during the national anthem to protest the treatment of black Americans, particularly by police.

President Trump earlier this year publicly criticized players who chose to kneel, ratcheting up the controversy.
