Philly’s School Reform Commission Votes Itself Out Of Existence
On Thursday, The School Reform Commission voted to discontinue itself. The vote comes amid 16 years of state oversight that have been a struggle.
Mayor Jim Kenney has stated he wanted to replace the commission with a local school board that would be appointed by him and approved by the City Council. Kenney suggests that it is time for the city of Philadelphia to be accountable for the education of its 200,000 schoolchildren.
The SRC has been in place since 2016.
With the passing of the resolution, the SRC will cease to exist in June of 2018.
Woman Says Al Franken Groped And Kissed Her Without Consent
On Thursday, morning radio news host Leeann Tweeden said that Al Franken groped and “forcibly kissed” her without consent in 2006 during a USO tour. Two years later Franken was elected to the U.S. Senate.
The shocking revelations have called for Franken to apologize to Tweeden and ignited a Senate ethics investigation into Franken’s behavior.
Tweeden posted a story to KABC Los Angeles saying, “You forcibly kissed me without my consent, grabbed my breasts while I was sleeping and had someone take a photo of you doing it, knowing I would see it later, and be ashamed.”
Mayor Kenney Says Sheriff Jewell Williams Should Step Down Amid Sexual Harassment Claims
Mayor Kenney said Thursday that following reports of sexual assault accusations against Sheriff Jewell Williams, he should resign. There are currently three women who have taken legal action against Sheriff Williams alleging workplace sexual harassment.
In an email with the Daily News, Mayor Kenney said, “I think he should step down… Three women have come forward – and one was paid a significant sum to settle her claim just a few years ago.”
