Often, mistreatment at nursing home facilities is emotional in nature, and while there may not be any outward physical signs of abuse, you can learn a lot by simply observing a resident’s behavior. If your loved one suddenly begins to act withdrawn, verbal abuse could be to blame. In some cases, the resident will be perfectly social until a forbidden topic is brought up, at which point, he or she will suddenly refuse to talk. In addition to refusing to talk with friends or family members about particular subjects, emotionally distant residents may suddenly lose interest in activities they once enjoyed.
