Steve Harvey’s announcement of the wrong Miss Universe winner in December has landed him on the receiving end of many jokes, but the comedian recently met with Miss Colombia on his talk show this week to formally apologize.

The episode with Ariadna Gutierrez aired Tuesday, featuring a tearful Harvey discussing the fiasco and explaining why he wanted to apologize to the 22-year-old in person. The beauty queen compared the experience to a nightmare, but eventually said she forgave the host.

Huffington Post reports:

“I want to make sure she’s OK,” the comedian said during the Tuesday episode of his show. “I really need to see her. I really, really do. I need her to hear it from me.” With tears in his eyes, Harvey told the beauty queen, “I just want to say how sorry I am. I’m beyond sorry for what happened that night.”

It wasn’t all emotional; the duo kept things somewhat lighthearted, with Gutierrez pointing out that not only did Harvey fool her into thinking she was the winner for a few minutes, he also kept pronouncing her name wrong. Harvey also thanked Gutierrez for not taking legal action following the debacle.

Towards the end of his show, the author and director discussed the topic of mistakes, saying they shouldn’t dictate the trajectory of one’s life.
