Queen Latifah sat down with HuffPost Live on Tuesday to chat about an array of topics, including her mother’s experience with congestive heart failure.

In partnership with the American Heart Association’s Rise Above Heart Failure movement, Latifah and her mother, Rita Owens, who was diagnosed with the condition 10 years ago, is raising awareness about the chronic condition. For Latifah, the learning process began when she received a phone call that Owens was rushed to the hospital after collapsing in a New Jersey classroom.

“Of course, I was freaked out at first, but then after all the testing was done and our doctor explained that she had congestive heart failure, it was like whoa. It hit us like a ton of bricks,” Latifah explained to HuffPost Live host Nancy Redd. “And it was kind of frightening at first, but once you get over the initial shock of it, it was now: What do we do? And that was where the learning process began.”

Following Owens’ diagnosis, Latifah enlisted help from family and friends, who were more than willing to offer care-giving assistance. “I had a lot of support from family members and my friends. It was not a problem,” Latifah added.
