natural hair women-bike-groceries

Like most of us, I am constantly on the look out for good, all-natural natural hair products. On the search, though, I find that a lot of companies market the whole line of products as a set, claiming that the products in the line work together. This is not necessarily true. I’ve found that after picking and choosing my favorite products from any line, based on word of mouth recommendations and lots of time spent on hair blogs, my hair seems to be the happiest it’s been in a long time.

My hair is technically classified as “4c,” which is very thick, tightly coiled, extra susceptible to breakage and constantly in need of a lot of moisture. I can’t use any heat or even think about dying my hair, and similarly hair products with crazy long unpronounceable alcohols in their list of ingredients make my hair dry, brittle and tangled. My main problem has always been length retention. My hair has never reached further than my cheekbones- it always broke off before it could grow any longer. Recently, however, after mixing and matching products to create a hair regimen specific to my needs, I’ve noticed a surge of growth, shine and moisture in my hair. These are the products I’ve found to be most useful.

  1. The Coconut Co-Wash from As I Am. You could say my hair regimen is built around this as a foundation. My hair-type does not respond well to a lot of shampooing, because it has such a hard time retaining moisture to begin with, and shampoo has a tendency to completely strip hair of all its moisture. Washing with just conditioner sometimes can cause a product build-up that really bothers some people. This co-wash, however, is designed to cleanse your hair and moisturize it at the same time. After using it, my hair feels clean, but not raw and dry, like shampoos make my hair feel. I wash my hair with this about once a week, 3 times a month. I also opt for this any time I have to throw in an extra wash due to a super-sweaty day or a day at the beach or pool.
  2. Kinky Curly Come Clean Shampoo. This stuff is great! It says it is sulfate free (which is ideal), and though it is actually not completely sulfate free, I’ve found that as long as I keep usage of this down to a minimum, it is a wonderful shampoo. I shampoo with this typically the 4th time that I wash my hair in a month, and my hair stays happy. After using this, my curls feel renewed and freshly defined, and my hair and scalp feel clean, but not dry and devoid of moisture.
  3. SheaMoisture Raw Shea Butter Deep Treatment Masque. Especially after using shampoo, I deep condition with this. I always apply generously and then run a shower comb through my hair to make sure it’s evenly distributed. Any time I use this deep conditioner, my hair’s moisture is immediately replenished, and it’s soft, shiny and light-weight.

  4. Hair Milk from Carol’s Daughter. Besides how heavenly it smells, it’s also a great moisturizer. It leaves my hair looking shiny and feeling quenched, and it’s also not too heavy or thick. It is also a curl definer, which doesn’t really matter to me because my curls are already so tiny that any extra definition basically looks no different to the naked eye, but regardless, you’ll get a 2-for-1 deal here if you’re looking for it.
  5. African Royale’s Hot Six Oil. This one is my favorite. I found this in Shoprite. Shoprite! I’m not joking. I looked at the ingredients and all of them were pronounceable (or edible, even), except for one, which, when I googled it, I learned is a harmless silicone found in many hair products. It’s called Hot Six because it can function as six different types of oil (for your skin, nails, hair, scalp, etc), but the medley of oils that is uses does wonders for my hair. I always make sure to use it last in the regimen (because oil seals in moisture). It smells amazing and adds a layer of incredible shine without weighing down on my coils. It also doesn’t take much to spread the wealth, which is saying something, because my hair quite densely populates the top of my head. I put it in while my hair is wet, and then when I run a (wide-toothed, of course!) comb through my head, it’s like a walk in the park. It is also a root stimulator, and probably the primary reason my hair growth has surged. I want to buy this stuff by the case.

So there you have it. By picking and choosing from multiple brands I found what works best for me. Don’t be afraid to stray away from your favorite brand. You never know what you might find!
