When a National Socialist Movement joined the Ku Klux Klan to spew their anti-immigration hate ideologies at a rally in Charlotte, North Carolina, last Saturday afternoon, they were met with a counter-protest that made them look like the clowns they are, according to NBC Charlotte.
Members of the Charlotte Latin American Coalition dressed up in clown gear and confronted the KKK with circus-like gags, such as squeak toys, whistles, and noisemakers that they used to drown out the hate-infused speeches.
When the extremist speakers touted “white power,” members of the Coalition, who were there to mock the hate groups and drive the point home that racism is absurd, sprinkled white flour and held up signs that read “Wife Power!”
“The message from us is, you look silly,” Lacey Williams, the youth coordinator for Charlotte’s Latin American Coalition told NBC Charlotte. “We’re dressed like clowns and you’re the ones that look funny.”

Meanwhile, rally attendant Jeff Schoep, a member of the Detroit-based neo-Nazi group National Socialist Movement told NBC Charlotte that he is pushing for his organization to be an alternative to the nation’s two-party political system with a platform that embraces White supremacy.
The rally, which was peaceful despite the vast opposing views of the protestors, was monitored by a phalanx of about 75 police officers who placed metal barricades separating the speakers from the protestors.
The rally went on for about two hours and afterward, the KKK and neo-Nazis were escorted away from the area by police.
According to Tom Strini, who donned a typical clown costume complete with a shiny red nose and rainbow hair, the protestors outnumbered the hate mongers at the rally. He told CBS Charlotte, “It just shows that more people in this country are in favor of equal and human rights than there are people who want to kick all dark-skinned people out of the country,” he said. “Instead of meeting hate with hate, they were going to meet hate with love.”
