The non-partisan Committee of Seventy urged Pennsylvania voters who need an acceptable form of photo ID to show at the polls in order to vote on November 6 to seek the Department of State Voter ID “of last resort” (commonly referred to as the DOS ID). This advice follows today’s announcement by the PA Department of State of new guidelines to make the DOS ID available to all voters.

The DOS ID is valid for 10 years and can be used only for voting. Voters can go to any PennDOT Driver’s License Center to obtain it.

Voters seeking the DOS ID should know the following:

No proofs of residency are required. Voters only need to provide their name, date of birth, social security number, and address.

You must be registered to vote in Pennsylvania. The voter registration deadline is October 9, 2012. PennDOT can check your registration. But voters can help themselves by making sure they are registered to vote in Pennsylvania before going to a PennDOT Driver’s License Center by calling 1-877-868-3772 or by logging onto: “https://www.pavoterservices.state.pa.us/Pages/voterregistrationstatus.aspxhttps://www.pavoterservices.state.pa.us/Pages/voterregistrationstatus.aspx.

Voters whose voter registration or information can’t be confirmed while they wait at PennDOT will get the DOS card in the mail once their registration/information is confirmed.

Voters who prefer to get the PennDOT ID – which can be used for voting and non-voting purposes – can still get this photo ID if they present their official birth certificate, Social Security card and two proofs of residency at a PennDOT Driver’s License Center.
