Philadelphia’s 59th Street Baptist Church is being torn apart over a battle between its pastor and his congregation. Rev. Daly Barnes Jr has been taking heat from his church for how he treats his wife and others of the church. Awanda Jackson a long time trustee of 59th Street Baptist Church said, “I don’t want to call the man an anti-Christ, but he’s almost in that category, the way he treats people.”

A committee of deacons and church trustees voted to fire Barnes, and sent him a formal dismissal letter in January. But the embattled pastor’s supporters met and voted to fire those trustees and deacons. Barnes has also been accused of terrorizing his wife at home and cursing her out in the church.

To make matter worse, Barnes spread the word that he suspects one of his church members of stealing  thousands of dollars from church funds. “I don’t tolerate stealing from the house of the Lord under no circumstance,” said Barnes.

In February the Westside Weekly ran a front page story on Rev. Dr. Daly Barnes with intentions of getting him fired over refusing to discuss a September 2010 domestic disturbance at his Upper Merion home that led to his arrest.
