She’s not normally part of the Twitterverse, but Wednesday, Mrs. Michelle Obama got a crash course in how to send a message out through Twitter, the hugely popular social networking site. But she wasn’t tweeting frivolously about what she was eating or when she’d make her next incognito Target appearance. The first lady was on a mission to drum up some serious support for her “Joining Forces” project to help military families.

Her first message said, “Military families serve our nation too. Let’s show our appreciation by Joining Forces with them. Get involved.” And she signed it “mo” for Michelle Obama, which will likely be the identifier for any future personal tweets.

The Joining Forces website says, “1% of Americans may be fighting our wars, but we need 100% of Americans to be supporting our troops and their families. Mrs. Obama and Dr. Biden are asking Americans to get involved in any way they can.”

Now that’s how you tweet for a cause.
