NEW YORK — For the first time in nearly two decades, New York City is requiring Sex Education classes in all of its public middle and high schools. The new requirements calls for students as young as 11-years-old to be instructed on topics like puberty, pregnancy, and the dangers of unprotected sex.

Currently only 64% of middle schools and 38% of high schools in New York City teach a recommended Sex Education curriculum.

“We must be committed to ensuring that both middle school and high school students are exposed to this valuable information so they can learn to keep themselves safe before, and when, they decide to have sex,” Chancellor Dennis Walcott said in an email to colleagues.
