New York– Tight hair braiding or weaving may contribute to a type of permanent hair loss that commonly affects African American women, a new study has found.

Experts say scarring is produced on the scalp when there is prolonged pulling at hair strands. Dermatologists call this type of scarring central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia, or scarring hair loss.

“I won’t tell you not to braid your hair, but I don’t want you to braid it so tightly that you need to take pain medication,” said Kyei, of the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio.
