James B. Golden Jr., the Philadelphia School District’s top safety executive, is leaving the school system.

A former Philadelphia cop and head of public safety in Trenton, Golden has been with the district for five years.

A district spokeswoman confirmed that Golden has submitted his resignation Tuesday.

“Jim has done a great job for the district. He’s going in another direction. The district was glad to have him,” said Lisa Mastoon, the spokeswoman.

Mastoon said that Superintendent Arlene Ackerman will meet with her leadership team Wednesday to discuss the district’s next moves “to make sure that security for the start of the school year is as excellent as it can possibly be.”
