Music legends and fans are mourning the loss of Soul Train host and creator Don Cornelius. The Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin released the following statement:

“It’s just so sad, stunning and downright shocking and a huge and momentous loss to the African-American community and the world at large. Don Cornelius single handedly brought about a melding and unity of brother and sisterhood among young adults worldwide

“The Help” cleaned up last night with wins for Best Ensemble cast, Best Actress for Viola Davis and Best Supporting Actress for Octavia Spencer at the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Etta James has died, according to her longtime friend and manager, Lupe De Leon. She was 73 and had been diagnosed with leukemia in 2010. James, who also suffered from dementia and hepatitis C, died at a hospital in Riverside, California.

James was recently released from the hospital just days after her condition improved enough for her to be removed from a breathing machine.
