Homeless does not mean hopeless! Rashema Melson is living proof as she graduates high school as a Valedictorian in spite of being homeless. For the last two years, Rashema has been staying in a single room at a homeless shelter with her mom and two brothers. Because of a lack of privacy and the amount of noise at the shelter, Rashema found it difficult to do her homework. That prompted her to head to school every morning around 7:00 a.m. and stay for the next 13 hours, taking honors courses and competing in track. But, she rarely spoke up about her family’s situation nor did she ever complain.

“Life is not fair, but despite that harsh reality, you must keep striving for success through the pain, tears and feeling of lost hope,” she said in a commencement speech. With that positive attitude and determination, she maintained a 4.0 grade point average and is heading to Georgetown University with a full scholarship.

“You have options and you decide which one you want to take, and I took education because it takes you for the long run. It’s not just a temporary thing or won’t just last for five years. Education will take me far.” – Rashema Melson
