Fried Sparrow

By Nycki C.

“What is the price of two sparrows – one copper coin? But, not a single sparrow can fall to the ground without your Father knowing it … So don’t be afraid …”

(Matthew 10:29 and Matthew 10:31a NLT)

It was a chilly, but sunny winter day. My oldest daughter and I were working diligently taking down the Christmas tree and carefully packing up the ornaments and holiday decorations. My little one was three years old, and a little too young to be of any real help. Everyone knows when a three year old decides to “help,” your project completion time immediately doubles. So, I was grateful that she was happily skipping and dancing all around us as we worked.

After finishing our work, I collapsed on the sofa and closed my eyes. We had worked hard all morning, and I was exhausted! Before falling into a real sleep, my “mommy instinct” led me to check on my youngest daughter who was out of sight and suspiciously quiet. I called to her, and she came right away with a fresh assortment of toys and trinkets. She was fine and seemingly behaving; so, I treated myself to a short nap.

I hadn’t been asleep for long when I was awakened by a loud terrifying explosive sound! I quickly sat up and began screaming both of my daughter’s names. My heart was pounding. My palms were instantly clammy and my throat had a lump in it. It had been less than a year since I had undergone a major surgery that left me with significant physical limitations. Therefore, my “scrambling” was painfully slow. As I was rising to my feet, I heard my baby girl pleading with her big sister in a terrified voice, “Don’t tell! Don’t tell!” At this point, I still had no idea what had happened. However, when I heard both of their voices, I was emotionally flooded by a wave of relief.
