A South Dakota Republican lawmaker believes that businesses should have the right to refuse service to certain type of customers including African-Americans because he believes the free market will eliminate any practices of discrimination over time. The law that State Senator Phil Jensen of South Dakota was trying to pass was Senate Bill 128 , which states that the government can not prosecute certain businesses from turning away certain consumers based on free speech pertaining to sexual orientation.
“If someone was a member of the Ku Klux Klan, and they were running a little bakery for instance, he majority of us would find it detestable that they refuse to serve blacks, and guess what? In a matter of weeks or so that business would shut down because no one is going to patronize them.”-Senator Jensen MSNBC
The law was initially pushed to allow businesses to decide whether or not they wanted to serve certain customers based on the companies’ religious beliefs about sexual orientation. Similar religious freedom bills have been proposed and defeated in Tennessee, Ohio, Indiana, Georgia, Mississippi, Arizona, Kansas, Maine, and Idaho. For more info, click on the link below.
