There now stands a rainbow painted house directly across the street from the Westboro Baptist Church’s compound.

The house is a project by a founder of the Planting Peace charity, Aaron Jackson.  Dubbed the “Equality House,” the property has been transformed into a physical manifestation of LGBT pride, anti-bullying, and love.

Why make a small house in Kansas serve this purpose?  The reason are the neighbors – the infamous Westboro Baptist Church.  The group is known for picketing numerous American soldier funerals, protesting the supposed anti-God and anti-gay nature of the United States, and most recently picketing the memorial for the victims of Sandy Hook.

Jackson has cited the incredible amount of media attention the Westboro Baptist Church has received over the years as being the incentive for creating the “Equality House”.  He has stated his organization wishes to “use their energy” and “turn it into something incredibly positive for the LGBT community.”

Run-ins between the two groups so far have been sparse. Jackson has reported members of the group photographing his house and even briefly speaking to Shirley Phelps, daughter of Fred Phelps and de facto leader of the church – but that was before he painted the house.  Now there is no question as to which side the neighbors are on.

The big question however, is whether Jackson and his groups’ stunt is worth it – the house cost an estimated $83,000.  From this investment he hopes to not only promote equality but help bring down the Westboro Baptist Church, an organization he claims is on the wrong side of history.  Do you think he’s right?
